In this fast-paced digital world where we are glued to our screens and videos replace reading, it has become critical to rekindle our association with books. Maha Vachan Utsav was established in 2024 by the Maharashtra State School Education Department.
The Mahavachan Utsav expands learning beyond the four walls of the classroom by promoting the reading and engagement with stories, biographies, novels, or essays to elicit imagination and critical thought. Read below to get more information about the festival, a complete guide for the program, and other things.
What is Mahavachan Utsav
This project involves pupils in Classes 3 to 12 and therefore presents ample opportunities for students of every age group to have age-appropriate reading habits. There are also some aspects of the projects that make them unique. It is not constrained to Marathi-medium schools only, meaning that students from all boards and mediums in the state of Maharashtra can participate, making this a truly inclusive event.
Likewise, one of the highlights is the appointment of Amitabh Bachchan as the face of the project. As the campaign’s brand ambassador, Amitabh Bachchan’s participation will enhance the festival’s outreach, captivating all students, parents, and teachers.
Public and Education Departmental Roles
Getting government support behind an initiative of this magnitude is critical to ensuring its success. The Maharashtra School Education Department has issued a Government Resolution (GR) that says all schools government, aided, and private are mandated to participate in the initiative.
This GR establishes the framework for implementation in several ways:
- All schools are mandated to participate so that no student is left out.
- Students are systematically grouped by their class levels to provide a level playing field for competition.
- Educational officers at both the district and taluka levels will monitor implementation, ensuring that schools properly execute the initiative.
- Specific budget provisions (more than 3 crore in 2024) are to make book fairs, events and awareness campaigns possible.
Structure and Groups for Mahavachan Utsav
To keep things equitable and enjoyable, this event is organised in three groups based on student age and grade level:
Group A (Classes 3-5): At this level, the goal is to develop basic reading skills. Students should choose to read short stories, fables, or simple stories that capture their interest.
Group B (Classes 6-8): Middle school students are better able to understand conflict plot lines and characters. Recommended reading includes novels, biographies, and history.
Group C (Classes 9-12): Senior students will read more complex literature, including autobiographies, philosophical essays, world literature, or issues related to contemporary and modern social themes.
Mahavachan Utsav Timeline and Duration
Mahavachan Utsav is not just a single-day celebration; it is a literary festival that lasts for a month. For 2024-25, the festival was conducted from 22 July to 30 August. This is typically what the timeline would look like:
- First Week: Schools register on the portal and introduce students to Mahavachan Utsav participation.
- Second Week: Students are reading their chosen books.
- Third Week: Submission of the written responses and recordings (audio or video).
- Fourth Week: School-based evaluation and transfer top responses to the taluka and district.
- Final Stage: District and State awards, certificates and prizes.
The Role of Teachers and Schools
Although students are at the centre of Mahavachan Utsav, teachers and schools play an equally important part in the successful running of the festival. In fact, without the active engagement of schools, the entire program may not be realised to its full potential.
Teachers as Advisors
- Teachers help guide students in choosing the appropriate books, especially young children.
- They probe students’ critical thinking by asking questions that lead to discussion.
- They shape students’ written reflections and prepare students for an audio/video presentation.
Schools as Enablers
- Schools run book exhibitions, fairs, and literary events to access reading opportunities.
- They create a mechanism for students through optional reading hours or design and run group reading activities.
