Mahavachan Utsav 2025: Registration, Last Date, Login and Latest Update

Books have always been the foundation of knowledge and imagination. In an era in which smartphones and social media dominate young minds, the Maharashtra government has launched Mahavachan Utsav-a large-scale festival of reading-to reconnect children to the joy of reading.

Mahavachan Utsav began in 2024 as no ordinary academic program; it is a literary movement that has an involvement of schools, students, teachers, and parents. Mahavachan Utsav started with the simple, powerful mandate to make reading a habit – not a task.

Mahavachan Utsav

The term “Mahavachan” translates to “great reading,” or “mega reading,” and “Utsav” means festival. Hence, Mahavachan Utsav means the festival of reading. In August 2024, the Maharashtra State School Education Department commenced the festival. The festival is conducted at the local school, taluka, district, and state levels, encouraging lakhs of students.

During the festival, each student selects books they wish to read, makes their best effort to read the books, and then writes a reflection (summary) about what they learned. They also record a 1-minute audio file or video file summary reflection about their learning experience, which is then uploaded through the official portal for public transparency and accountability.

By engaging students in both reading and presenting their reflections, we are actually achieving two essential goals. They are to create a culture of reading for youth and to showcase communication and expression.

Objectives of Mahavachan Utsav

The Mahavachan Utsav is not just an event for reading a few books, but is driven by educational and social objectives. The following are the primary objectives:

Aims to promote reading

The Mahavachan Utsav aims to promote reading habits among the students by encouraging them to read stories, novels, biographies and poems. These genres of reading help students widen their imagination and develop creativity.

Improves comprehension and communication

Writing their reflections and verbally presenting summaries on books helps children improve their written and oral communication.

Decreases dependency on screens

Children are increasingly developing an addiction to smartphones. The Mahavachan Utsav creates an alternative for students to replace that screen with a book, if only for some time, at least once a day.

Who is Eligible to Participate?

Participation is open to all students (all types) from Maharashtra to participate in the Mahavachan Utsav in specific ways.

Helps with Vocabulary and Language Development

Reading every day allows students to see new words, sentence framing, and expressions, helping with their entire thought process.

Builds Critical Thinking Skills

When students write reflections, they don’t just regurgitate summaries but analyse, interpret, and form opinions, increasing their critical thinking skills.
